Guessed why a scheduled job didn't run, without reading the logs
Computer maintenance
- Situation
- A job scheduled to run at the same time every day didn't run one day.
- What the AI did
- Without reading the logs, it wrote "the computer was probably asleep" and moved on. The program running the job had been closed. It added no alert, so a later three-day outage from another cause went unnoticed at first.
- How to ask next time (the operator's example)
- "Before writing a cause, read the log for that time and quote one line showing what happened. Even if the cause is unclear, set up something that will tell us the next time it stops."
- One question to ask
- Which record would confirm the cause?
- Check it yourself
- On Linux with systemd,
journalctl -u cron(crondon Fedora) shows whether cron started the job; on macOS,launchctl print gui/$(id -u)/<label>shows the last exit code. Read that line yourself. - AI used (month)
