Cut laughter as if it were "time when nobody is talking"
Video editing
- Situation
- Having an AI automatically cut silences and pauses from a recorded conversation video. The editing guide said to keep laughter.
- What the AI did
- Laughter doesn't show up in a transcript, so it treated it as time when no one was speaking and cut all of it. It had read the rule but couldn't tell laughter apart.
- How to ask next time (the operator's example)
- "Before cutting, here is one spot where I know there's laughter:
[time]. Check first whether you can identify it as laughter. If you can't, tell me before you cut anything." - One question to ask
- Can this method pick out what must be kept?
- Check it yourself
- Open the transcript your editing tool made at a spot where you know people laughed. If the laugh isn't marked there, a cut based on that transcript will treat it as silence. Test on a 30-second clip first.
