Concluded "there's nothing left to delete" without looking
Computer maintenance
- Situation
- Asking an AI to find things that can be deleted to free up disk space.
- What the AI did
- Twice it concluded that nothing more could be deleted. It was following a rule to delete only what someone had marked as deletable, and never looked at large, unneeded files with no mark.
- How to ask next time (the operator's example)
- "Before you say there's nothing left, list the largest remaining items from the top down, with the reason each one can't be deleted."
- One question to ask
- Before saying "nothing left": were the large items with no mark looked at too?
- Check it yourself
- In the folder, run
du -d 1 -k . | sort -n | tail -20(macOS or Linux). Unlikedu *, it includes hidden folders. Ask the AI for a reason it keeps each of the largest. - AI used (month)
